Endodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on the root canal procedure. Root canal treatment is the area of dentistry dealing with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the dental pulp and nerve tissue.
We use root canal treatment to treat the cause of dental pain, infection or decay caused by bacteria. If a tooth is infected and hurting, the dental pulp needs to be treated. The dental pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. It lies within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root. .
When the dental pulp is inflamed or injured from bacteria or trauma, the pulp tissue dies. If the pulp is not removed, your tooth can become infected. After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed to protect it. A crown over the tooth helps keep the tooth strong and prevents tooth fracture.
